Theory
There are a wide variety of multimedia video formats & compression techniques used for video data compression. Some of the commonly used video formats are
- MPEG-1 / MPEG-2
- AVI Format
- Windows Media Format
- H.264
There are open source codecs and libraries available to encode and decode these video formats.
MPEG-1
The MPEG- 1 defines a lossy video compression standard agreed upon by the Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG). MPEG-1 was basically designed to provide a good video quality with a bit-rate of 1.5Mbps and a resolution of 352x240 or 352x258.
A good advantage that MPEG-1 holds over other formats is that it’s the most compatible format and works across almost all the computers. The MPEG-1 standard is also unencumbered of any software patents in the USA.
